Now Have Four Online Courses

Students last semester had a wonderful experience in taking the online classes through Antioch Baptist College. I have developed four classes for the purpose of offering these four classes as well as developing more classes for online study.

If you cannot study in class, your option is to study online. The assignments are challenging and helpful, and you will learn important concepts for life.

In order to register for any or all of these four classes, you may go to http://www.firstharrison.org/registration.htm and fill out the form and submit it. Classes Are In Session

Classes are in session at Antioch Baptist College. You have two weeks from January 25, 2010, to sign up for any of the classes you may desire to take. Look at our list of classes and consider registering for one of the classes.

Pray that we will have a great semester and that God will be pleased to teach us by his Holy Spirit and give us a deeper understanding and love for God's word.

New Semester

If you will look at the Antioch Baptist College web site, you will see the classes offered for our spring semester of 2010. There are some interesting classes offered. Consider taking one or two of these classes. You will be glad you did.

Our meeting place will be different this semester. Please keep in contact so you will know where to meet for classes on January 25, 2010.

I will not be teaching again this semester, but perhaps next semester I will get back on board.

Pray that we can get things together to make our internet studies available by the fall of 2010. This is our goal, but there is a lot of work to do. Pray for us.

Registrations & Applications

As dean of Antioch Baptist College it is my duty to make rosters for the current classes, be sure that everyone is registered, and that applications are properly filled out.

From that point I must make new folders on all new students and collect and file all registrations for the current semester with all pertinent information. With some I must make new master files so that grades can accumulate on the file for each student, keeping these documents current.

We had several to register on August 24, 2009, for the fall semester. The teachers all have their syllabi, and they are ready to take the challenge for each class. We are thankful for every teacher that we have.

Beginning of School Month - August 2009

On August 7, 2009, the teachers and workers of Antioch Baptist College will have a meeting to tie up some loose ends before school begins on August 24.

Classes will be held at Winton Place Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, this year. Morning Star Baptist Church is in the process of building a new building. Until that is done, the school will meet at Winton Place.

We are thrilled to know that some new students will begin classes this year. We are praying the Lord will send more new students as well as repeat students.

Pray for the school.

Work Continues As Dean

Bro. Dan Ferrell talked me into staying with the job until someone else can be appointed as Dean of the school. Pray that God will touch someone's heart to take this position.

Meanwhile, please pray for the progress of the school. Antioch has good teachers and a good curriculum. Pray that God will send students to the school to study God's word.

Participate in the Baptist Prayer Day on August 16, 2009. This will be a day when many churches pray together to call men to preach. Resignation

I have just resigned as dean of Antioch Baptist College because of my health. I do not have the energy to continue to do the work with the pace that is required. I would rather someone else take the position who can do a better job.

May God bless Antioch Baptist College and all its work that will be accomplished by the able staff. God is in the work, and I believe he has great things for the school in the future.

Pray for Antioch Baptist College, and support the school if you can. Advertise the school at your church, and encourage young men and women to take classes. Take a class yourself even if it is just to audit the course.

Graduation

On June 7, 2009, Antioch Baptist College had a graduation exercise at Morning Star Baptist Church in West Chester, Ohio. The meeting began at 3:30 PM. There was great singing, some short speeches, and a keynote sermon from Bro. Cliff Christman from Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond, Kentucky. Bro. Christmas is our vice-president and head of our Greater Lexington Branch of the school.

We gave one four-year diploma and four certificates to lower classmen. The service was well attended.

Year Winding Down

The classes at Antioch Baptist College are winding down. In the next two weeks classes will be over, and the students will be enjoying a little break from their studies. It is our prayer that they will continue, however, to study the Bible and do reading from Christian books.

Graduation will be at Morning Star Baptist Church on June 7, 2009, at 3:00 PM. We have eight people who will be receiving certificates.

The schedule of classes for the fall semester will be published soon. Think about taking one or more classes this fall. Classes will begin in August.

Advisory Board

Antioch Baptist College had a wonderful meeting with the Advisory Board on May 8, 2009, at the school building. Many topics were discussed, including ways in which ABC can get the word out about their classes and also ways to support the school.

We had a wonderful time of fellowship with some interested pastors and teachers from ABC. Sister Ferrell served a wonderful meal, and we all went away filled with refreshment both physical and spiritual.

Pray for Antioch Baptist College. We are doing our best to make it a school that will serve local churches and teach young men and women the truths of God's word.

Obeying God's Commandments

I have been reading the book entitled "Vindication of The Baptists from the Charge of Bigotry, of Refusing Communion at the Lord's Table To Paedobaptists," by Abraham Booth, and I was struck by the following statement: "In God's service, it is a greater sin to do that which we are not to do, than not to do that which we are commanded." One, as he says, is the sin of commission, while the other one is a sin of omission. The former is more serious than the latter.

Is this not the "presumptuous sins" spoken to us by the Psalmist in Psalm 19:13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous [sins]; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression?

The sin of omission may be presumptuous, also; but the sin of commission is more bold and obvious. For us to commit sins contrary to God's commandments will destroy our affection to God, which is foremost in our obedience to him. He will certainly chastise both these sins, but the sin of commission will be the more serious one.

The sin of commission requires the basis of law. In other words, a law must have been executed before a sin to its contrary can be committed--refusal to obey the law or committing a thing in the contrary form; but the sin of omission may be nothing but one of ignorance of the law. The penalty of sin through ignorance is not as severe as the penalty of sin through knowledge. James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth [it] not, to him it is sin.

Diminishing Christianity

In my recent reading I have found that many Americans are turning from traditional religion to secular thought. This is disturbing, although not surprising. When our homes and public schools are neglecting their duties of teaching religious values, there is no wonder that religious values suffer. One article that I read stated that nearly 37% of Americans deny belief in God or in religion. The churches' job of preaching and teaching the Gospel message is more important today than it has been in the past 20 years or so. The Bible says, "Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God," so we believe that we must give the message of God's word so that people will come to Jesus Christ and believe in him.

In our homes we need to continue to speak of God, the Bible, and God's Son, Jesus Christ, so that our children will be exposed to God's truth. We should not send our children to church, but we should take them to church. I see in so many churches that parents do not attend but rather send their children to church; consequently, the children grow up without parental influence in their religious lives. Then they soon turn from their religious teachings to the influence of the world. Hopefully they will later in life see the error of their ways and come back to following God's word.

The need for Scripture teaching should be a high priority in our day. That is the reason Antioch Baptist College was started. We pray that God will use the school to instruct young and old alike in the things of God, his word, and his Son.

Received Doctorate Certificate

I have been waiting for almost two months for my doctorate certificate to come in the mail, and yesterday it came. It is beautiful. It is 11 x 14 in size, and I have it framed in a black frame. The degree is Doctor of Religious Education, or DREd. The work was hard and long, but the work was worth it. I learned much through this experience, and now I have the "sheepskin" that I have planned to have all my life. I am thankful for God that he has made this possible, and I am thankful to the church here for their patience in my taking time to do the work and to eventually receive this degree. Thank the Lord with me.

Good Classes Continue

I am teaching a writing class one-on-one with a student who needs help in his writing. We are having a great time in class with two computers side by side, referencing textbooks and discussing how to form sentences, paragraphs, and eventually theses and research papers. We are rehearsing how to make headers and footers on the page and how to footnote, endnote, and make a bibliography. These are all helpful to any preacher.

I am being challenged to use Microsoft Word, because that is the program my student has and uses. I am more familiar with Corel WordPerfect. I believe it is easier than Word to use in some of the operations.

My hope is that both teacher and student will be challenged to write more and to do more research and then put the research on paper.

My other class is New Testament Survey, and this class is very interesting for both teacher and students. We rehearse the stories we have heard all of our lives, and we try to learn some things that may have slipped by us as we have read the New Testament. This course gives an overview of the New Testament and hopefully challenges us to live for Jesus Christ in a more perfect way.

Classes Going Well

The first classes at Antioch Baptist College have gone well. We do not have as many students as we would like, but the classes are enjoyable. The one thing that I do like about a small class is the participation that can be done. We can talk almost one on one with each student and share more from the few students that we have. This is very helpful and educational. Questions may also be asked more frequently.

If you would like to meet with one of the classes, just stop by the school at class times, and I am sure the teachers will allow you to sit in one class without any charge. You may enjoy it and later enroll for a class or two.

Groundhog Day

Yesterday was Groundhog Day, and I hear that the groundhog saw his shadow. That means that we will have six more weeks of bad weather. Of course, we all know that this old German superstition has no merit, because we all know that we are going to have six more weeks of "ify" weather anyway.

If you still have not decided to take a class at Antioch Baptist College, you still have time. Come to one of the classes this week, beginning at 6:00 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and just sit in to see if you would like to take the class.

Classes Continue

I did not have my classes on Friday evening at Antioch Baptist College because of the weather, but we are intending to be in full service beginning Monday. I stayed in my house from Tuesday through Sunday. The weather was icy and snowy.

My classes are "New Testament Survey" and "Christian Writing." In the Christian Writing class, we will do some rehearsal of English grammar and practice writing articles, theses, letters, etc. There is still time to register for this class. Survey begins at 6:00 PM, and Christian Writing begins at 8:00 PM. The school meets on North Commerce Park Drive off Shepherd Lane from I-75.

Pre-registration at Antioch

Last evening many of the teachers and some students of the school met together for a time of discussion and prayer concerning the school, its curriculum, its purpose, and a desire to see God bless the work at the school.

Before the meeting ended, we divided up into two groups for prayer. Each group had a time of prayer for the school, asking God to bless the coming semester, the teachers and the students.

This Is A New Blog

This blog has been changed from a previous one that I had at this address. This blog will now take up the task of giving a weekly update on Antioch Baptist College as experienced from the Academic Dean.

A meeting with faculty and a pre-registration is scheduled for this evening. January 26, 2009, will be the first day of classes. Pray with us as we prepare for another semester teaching the Word of God. We have some wonderful teachers, and we so appreciate their sacrifice to give their time and effort to the work that is laid out before them to bring relevant knowledge to each student who attends.

Instructions For A Young Preacher #21

1 Tim. 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.

Basically here Paul is instructing Timothy to take care of his health. A preacher should never neglect his physical infirmities. He should take measures to keep himself as healthy as his knowledge will allow him to do. He should exercise, not only in the things of God, but his own body. Paul tells Timothy in 1 Tim. 4:8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

Yes, bodily exercise profits little, but it does profit a little; so we should do what physical exercise that we can to keep in good health. Many Americans today do not exercise enough due to the curse of the couch and the TV. Some of us cannot exercise as much as others, so we do what we can; but we must keep a watch on our health through diet, exercise and cleanliness.

Sometimes we need a little medicine to help us. Evidently, Timothy had a stomach ailment and needed a medicinal remedy; so Paul told Timothy to take a little medicine for his stomach ailment. We are blessed today to have more and more natural products that will help ailments without having to use so many drugs. That is a blessing.

If a preacher is not healthy, he cannot give his mind completely to study, and his attitude sometimes will become sour. Many preachers do not get enough rest, and they seem to take it out on everyone but themselves. The body needs rest, and we as preachers should not feel guilty about taking that rest; neither should preachers brag about how little sleep they get to make people think they are really spiritual by overworking themselves.

A preacher, especially a pastor, never knows when he may need to get up in the early hours of the morning to make a hospital visit, take a member to the hospital, or visit a family who has just lost a baby in the night. I have had to do this many times. If we guard our sleep, our eating habits, and our spiritual fortitude, those things will be much easier than if we try to live haphazardly.

Washing your hands often is a good idea. You may even use a sanitizer to keep from spreading germs, especially if you are going from one room to another in the hospital. Keeping your fingernails clean is very important. They should also be cut short so as not to carry germs. This takes a little work, but it is worth it. It may keep you well and help keep down the spread of germs from one person to the other.

While your are at it, it would not hurt to keep your shirts clean, your suit pressed, and your shoes shined. We must make a good impression on people, telling them that our service to the Lord is important; it is not just a job. Our message is powerful, our work is important, and our impression on others may make the difference between being able to preach the Gospel to a person and being rejected. Let's give honor to God. He gave us only one body; let us not wear it out but use it for his service as long as we can. Long live the preacher, and may God give good health to our pastors, teachers, and evangelists; and while we are alive, let us give of our best to the Master.
